Abstract

The teaching profession is fundamental for world development. Globally, teachers play a pivotal role in social life. The teaching community has emerged as a powerful platform for innovation and research. Of much importance is the analysis of teaching communities in specific countries. The paper features a comparative analysis of sociological data, related to teachers in the Sverdlovsk region (the Russian Federation). The data was collected in 1989, 2016, and 2021. The surveys studied social ideas and stereotypes typical of teachers’ image in Russian public attitudes and teaching communities. We also studied the accounts of the teaching profession, the characteristics of professional well-being, and factors that determine it. One of the interesting findings is the fact that the data comparative analysis demonstrated that over three decades the proportion of female teachers and teachers of older age groups has increased, however, the education level has gone up, too. Interestingly, the motivation of intended teachers for choosing the profession, as well as, their satisfaction factors remained the same. Simultaneously, teaching career chances’ assessments and professional well-being have noticeably deteriorated. Among key factors affecting teachers’ satisfaction level are physical condition, small wages, short time for private life, and endless school reforms. All this led to a decline of the teaching profession prestige, coupled with the formation of a negative image. The paper describes efforts needed to ensure the enhancement of the teaching profession in the Russian Federation.
