Online News Video: Development Milestones and Research Trends
Abstract
The article explores the key stages of online news video development, together with the primary trends of online news video research. Through the analysis of Digital News reports compiled by Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, we distinguish three major stages of the development of online news videos: the formation stage in 2013–2015, the first platform shift in 2016–2020, and the second platform shift from 2021 to the present time. The period prior to 2013, we suggest, be recognized as the premises stage. We test this model in the context of the Russian media system. Further analysis of all the online news video-related publications over the past 25 years in major international and Russian databases shows that research directions reflect the main trends of the three stages of online news video development. We conclude our observations by stating that the proposed framework is supported by data from Western, Asian, and some Southern contexts, showing remarkable parallels despite different media systems. Future research should test it in other regions.
